Lens are one of the important part of the using a DSLR. DSLR manufacturers don't offer a fixed lens that is useful for all the situations. We always have to use different lenses for different situations. A single lens cant be used everywhere. We have a 2 different types of lens and a large variety of lenses that are categorized under these two types.
So let's see these two types of lenses.
Prime Lens -

Prime lens are those who have a fixed apperture i.e. f-stop no. Thus prime lens allow a fixed amount of light entering through the lens( Though the amount of light entering the camera can be changed by change in shutter speed). Some prime lens have a fixed focal length such as - 50 mm lens, 18 mm lens, 35 mm lens etc. You cannot zoom in or zoom out with the lenses that have fixed focal length. While there are some prime lens that gives some amount of flexibility in terms of focal length ,such as - 16-35mm , 17- 40 mm etc. Prime zooms don't have a larger focal length thus they cant be used for sports photography,Wildlife photography etc.
The positive point of using a prime lens is that , it has a smaller f/stop no. that is a wider aperture. This gives a depth effect to your images. It also produces a Bokeh effect due to wider aperture. Due to a wider aperture the lens works good in low light and thus producing a clear image, if the same image is clicked using aa zoom lens then the user will have to increase ISO to produce the same imege with same exposure, The higher the ISO more the noise in your image. Thus Prime lenses are better for shooting in low light and producing clear images. Other positive points of using a prime lens is that it creates more saturated and realistic colours thus can be used for scenery or landscape photography. The lens also creates more sharper images than zoomm lenses. Prime lenses are mainly used for portraits, wedding photography, landscape photography etc. Prime lens have more positive poiint to be used by a professional photographer.
Zoom Lenses -

Zoom lens are mainly those with a huge focal length such as - 70 - 300 mm , 70 - 200 mm, 600 mm etc. Zoom lens provide a long focal length thus suitable for sports photography and wildlife photography where you have to constantly change the focal length and also have to shoot long distance shots. Zoom lens come with a larger f/sstop no. than prime lens and thus allowing a lower amount of light to enter through.Zoom lenses can also be used to compose portraits but they create a lesser bokeh effect than prime lenses. the larger focal length helps you to shoot people, things, objects etc. that are placed a long distance from the observer. Zoom lens are often heavier in weight and bulky to carry. Zoom lens have Image stabilization features that stand out from prime lens, while taking image with a higher focal length, a small shake can make your picture blur . This is where image stabilization feature comes in use.
At end I can say that both , Prime and Zoom lenses are of equal importance and have there uniqueness. Both are useful for a professional photographer. It depends upon the situation whether to use a prime lens or a zoom lens.
